While Dar es Salaam residents are facing long-lasting power cuts these days, lights of Kerege Orphanage in Bagamoyo District will always be on. Rex Investment Ltd, Tanzania’s leading solar energy company has donated a solar energy system to the centre and launched it on Saturday. This system is powering lights and communication appliances for Kidz Care Tanzania, the NGO running the institution, this is part and parcel of Rex’s corporate social responsibility policy.

Kerege children as the system is being switched onWithout electricity, providing education and care has proved to be increasingly difficult. How can the children study after dark? How can they be taken care of while staff is striving to deal with electricity problems? Rex Investment donation has critically improved the centre functioning. With power available night and day children will now be able to study more. Solving communication difficulties will also result in easier organisation for the NGO and increased availability of staff. For Rex Investment, providing reliable electricity to this orphanage is not only providing power but directly helping the NGO to give the best home and the best chances of future to these vulnerable children.

The solar system was handed over on Saturday, on the occasion of Earth Hour global initiative. This call to action consists in turning off all lights for one hour at 8:30 PM all over the world to deliver a strong message on climate change and carbon emission reduction. In Tanzania where only 10% of the population have access to electricity Rex Investment and WWF chose to rather celebrate the event by “turning renewable electricity on”: an event for which the solar energy company played a major role. The first phase consisted in launching a WWF-funded solar system that Rex installed at Miguruwe Secondary School in Kilwa District. And to emphasize on Rex Investment dedication, the company decided to deliver its donation to the Kerege Orphanage on Earth Hour day. This gesture aims at demonstrating both its local social commitment and its concern on global climate change and at raising awareness on alternative and eco-friendly power solutions.
