Rex Energy, (Rex Investment Group) Tanzanian pacemaker in the solar industry has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with MRIGlobal, a leading research institute in the United States of America.
The signing took place on December 11, 2015 at the MRIGlobal Head quarters in Kansas City, Missouri (USA) between Mr. Thomas M. Sack President and CEO of MRIGlobal and Mr. Francis Kibhisa Rex Energyas Managing Director.
The signing of the MOU provides a framework within which both parties seek to achieve their common objective of designing, installing, commissioning and operating commercially viable hybrid minigrids for providing electricity to various market segments in Tanzania and eventually elsewhere in the Sub-Saharan Africa. Rex Energy and MRIGlobal are interested in further exploring the viability of minigrids for rural electrification in remote areas, and backup power supply for several areas that are currently underserved by the national utility company. Examples of such sectors include manufacturing industries, government institutions, and power systems for urban complexes that are being built by the government.
Currently the two parties are implementing a pilot minigrid project in Ukerewe, Lake Victoria islands a project that is funded by US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). Discussions commenced in December 2014 culminating into the approval by the USTDA in July 2015, of a US $ 818,000 grant. This project will provide electricity to about 400 homesteads, create numerous employment opportunities and its commissioning is planned for April 2016.
MRIGlobal is an independent organization in the United States of America that performs contract researches. This organization was found in 1944. It is one of the nationas leading research institutes and it is internationally exalted.
